Influence of progesterone receptor on metastasis and prognosis in breast cancer patients with negative HER-2

The dramatic increase in breast cancer survival in recent years (since the 1970s) has been attributed to the discovery of hormone receptors (HRs), human epidermal factor growth receptor 2 (HER-2) and the widespread use of endocrine and targeted therapies.
Conclusions: ER−/PR subtype had a high proportion of stage IV patients. Meanwhile, such subtype breast cancer had similar clinicopathological characteristics, metastatic models (prefers to visceral metastasis), similar even worse prognosis compared with TNBC.

• Little research assesses the clinicopathology and prognosis of single-hormone receptor subtypes in the context of metastatic breast cancer. In the current study, investigators used the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database to assess this issue.
• In the current study, the single progestin-positive subtype represented % in HER-2 negative patients was noted in 1%–4% in all breast cancer patients. These patients exhibit increased tumor mass, higher grade tumors, and higher HER-2 expression, according to previous studies. Tumors were aggressive, with single hormone receptor-positive (e.g., PR negativity) breast cancer an independent risk factor for visceral metastases.
• In the current study, investigators noted that ER−/PR+ patients and TNBC patients exhibited a comparable metastasis pattern, with both developing visceral metastasis but not bone metastasis.
